Curious title? Yes, but illustrative for our discussion.
Often an analogy serves best to make a point. We will explore three.
In the world of pickles and whisky, a wooden barrel is the ideal storage vessel. Some people even advertise how their liquor or beer is aged in oak barrels. Laudable, as they even claim to make their barrels for that very purpose.
Now, in the construction of a well-made wooden barrel, the pieces known as staves, must be crafted with perfection to make a liquid tight construction. Even these “perfect” staves must be held in place by some external force; metal bands, to maintain integrity. Should some other external force be placed on the barrel, in most cases these bands will resist catastrophic failure. However, should an external force be applied to a single stave, the entire barrel might collapse, as together all are strong but individually, they are not.
The human body’s complex systems are rather like a barrel of wooden staves held together with “bands” of proper diet, exercise, mental well-being, hydration, supplementation and rest.

Happy New Year!
That calls for a drink…right? Yes, because I’ve gotten a nasty upper respiratory bug that thinks I need to leave the planet! So what to drink?
Let’s begin with one silly question. It’s a question most Medical Doctors may never ask you but it could be a matter of life and death. “How much do you drink?” No! Not that kind of DRINK! “WATER!!! For goodness sake!” Yes, water. Let me explain:
Around this time of year people tend to lower the amount of water they consume and may become dehydrated. Also, as one ages, the body can send out signals that feel like hunger but is in reality a request for water. So, how much is too much or too little? Wait….too much…you can do that to yourself? Well, yes. And the consequences are life threatening. Let’s look at this for just a moment.

I remember it well. I was 11 years old and was helping load turkeys on to a truck for market well into the evening on our Central Texas farm. NASA had just launched a giant 100-foot-tall mylar balloon into earth orbit. In such an evening, this marvel of modern technology (created to bounce radio signals around the earth) would reflect the setting sun and glow as bright as the brightest star. It would also travel overhead, orbiting the earth every 90 minutes; such a sight!!!
An old farm hand was laboring with us to finish the job just as the satellite passed over in the western sky. I shouted to everyone, “Look, there goes Echo!!!” The old man kept his eyes to the task at hand on the ground. I said, “Mr. Henry, look. The NASA satellite is shining like a star!” He refused to look up. I asked, “Don’t you want to see it?” He kept his head down and simply said, “Don’t believe in that nonsense…”

Okay, let’s talk about Recovery….
No, not THAT Recovery….recovery from athletic competition and general strenuous physical exercise.
Ask any competitive runner, “What is the one thing that keeps you from improving your times?” and they will tell you, “Recovery time.”
There you have it; the most common complaint from any athlete on the planet. People who train must have time for their muscles and tendons to mend and their aerobic systems to adapt. Precious time. They often take every form or vitamin and mineral ever devised by humans and yet, it still takes time…no matter what.
Here’s a true story about a man named Chuck Cash. He was formerly in the U. S. Army for 20 years, retired and begin working as a successful salesman at age 47. His favorite pastime was competitive running; 5K’s, 10K’s, full marathons and rapidly fading dreams of one day competing in Tri-Athlons and pure fantasies of being a ranked Iron Man.
Aging…Really? Is that what it is?

That title sets you up …doesn’t it?
Everyone knows what aging is…right?
It’s what happens to every single person that has now or will every live. That is true, but it still does not tell anyone what AGING really is or why it happens.
Let’s lay it all out: Science now knows that AGING is nothing more than starving to DEATH slowly.
“WHAT? Granny gets her meals every day…so does Grandpa, Uncle Howard and Aunt Bessie!!! They are not starving!!!” At least that is what their friends and relatives would say. They would be WRONG. They are starving to DEATH. Most likely…so will I….and so will you….
How can this be? Very simply….the slow death of one’s Mitochondria. And, it is a SLOW death.

Just what do we believe and why?
Most of our core beliefs have been formed in early childhood. Then, we spend a lifetime adding, subtracting and generally modifying this basic set of “Impressions”.
Take a person raised by a family who regarded anyone other than their race or ethnicity as inferior. Then, this young person begins a life of meeting, engaging and generally discovering that such notions were wrong, just plain silly or down right hurtful….the basic “Impressions” have to be modified.

Over and over we are told the world is ending for modern medicine regarding the fight against germs and viruses of every form. We now know people are dying in hospitals from flesh-eating bacteria and the elderly are succumbing from upper respiratory infections by the hundreds of thousands.
What can be done? Hand-wringing… for sure. Research…yes. Money, money, money…you bet!
What if all of this was simply due to patents and control of the marketplace, not medicine? It’s true. Let me explain.
